One Small Dent, One Big Quality Lesson

We were at a jewellery expo last year. One of those crowded halls where every manufacturer is showing their best work and every buyer is comparing pieces side by side.

A buyer picked up a red gold bangle 18 karat, well-polished, good weight. Then he did what experienced buyers do. He pressed his thumbnail into the inner surface. Gently, but firmly.

It dented.

Nobody said a word. The buyer put the bangle down, smiled politely, and moved to the next table. The manufacturer watched. He knew what had just happened.

Yeh scene baar baar hota hai.

The problem nobody talks about at the stall

Here's what that thumbnail test actually reveals: the master alloy behind the gold isn't doing its job.

Most red gold master alloys deliver a hardness of around 150–170 HV straight out of the mould. That's fine for display pieces that sit in a case. But for bangles that go on a wrist, chains that get pulled, rings that catch on doorknobs 170 HV is not enough.

The piece looks finished. But it isn't ready for real life.

And here's the deeper issue. Most manufacturers producing red gold are carrying two, sometimes three or four different master alloys one for 14 karat, another for 18 karat, maybe a different one for 9 or 21. Each has its own melting profile, its own colour shade, its own process settings. Every changeover is a risk point. And across orders, the red colour drifts.

The buyer at the expo isn't just testing hardness. He's testing consistency. "Agar yeh bangle dent ho rahi hai, toh baaki pieces ka kya haal hoga?"

Where the cost actually sits

The dent at the trade show is the visible symptom. The business damage is less visible but far more expensive.

Pieces that dent come back. Returns erode retailer confidence. Retailers stop reordering. Discounting begins.

Meanwhile, carrying four master alloy grades ties up working capital, complicates procurement, and creates dead stock when one grade moves slower than the others. Your stores team manages four item codes, four sets of process parameters, four reorder points. For what? The same colour family.

And the colour itself? When you switch between master alloys batch to batch, colour matching across orders becomes a QC headache. A slight shift in the a* value, and pieces from different production runs look like they belong to different collections.

One alloy, one colour, one hardness standard

Antares-10 is Legor's all-purpose red gold master alloy. It covers 375 through that's 9, 14, 18, and 21 karat from a single inventory line.

The composition is engineered for a consistent red with colour coordinates fixed at L* 86.0, a* 9.2, b* 15.5. Same colour whether you're pouring 14 karat or 21 karat.

The melting range is 10°C (solidus 900, liquidus 910). That's tight. Tight enough that small temperature drifts in your furnace don't turn into tree failures.

And here's what matters at the trade show: after a single-step age-hardening cycle 250°C for 90 minutes, quench in air hardness reaches 330 HV. That's nearly double the as-cast hardness of most competing alloys.

That bangle? Nobody's denting it with a thumbnail.

One alloy code replaces three or four — procurement gets simpler, stores carries one item.

10°C melting range — tighter casting, fewer rejects, higher first-pass yield.

What this won't fix

Antares-10 is designed for red gold. If your line runs yellow or white, this isn't the alloy for you.

The age-hardening step is required for the full 330 HV if you skip it, you're at 175 HV as-cast, which is standard but not exceptional. Make sure your process includes the 250°C / 90-minute cycle.

Deoxidation level is minimum. If your melting environment introduces heavy oxide contamination, address that upstream.

And as always better raw material doesn't fix a broken process. Par agar aapka casting already solid hai, this alloy removes the last variable.
